This is a great extension! I don't understand how it works, but it doesn't seem to function on some sites. I was playing around with it a bit, at some sites like it doesn't offer to fill anything; other sites won't fill the street address (because it doesn't recognize it as being an address?)

Hank, the extension key of field names in the forms to figure out what to fill out. It supports the standard field names as defined in the eCommerce standard (RFC3106) and then some. We will in a later version add logic that also uses the text or label, that most often is placed in front of an input field, to figure out what the use of the input field is.

Harvey, if you want to fill out your details, either click on the options button in the extension manager or go to Tools->Autofill->Autofill Options. The dialog that pops up will allow you to enter your details. The toolbar button only enables on a page with a fields that autofill recognizes to give you a visual indication. Hope that helps.

I took a look at the form, CuriousG, the issue is the names of the fields in that form suck (for instance, the source address name is "1a"). The current version of Autofill only recognizes form field names. The next version of Autofill will include text/label to field mappings which should help these kind of situations alot.

When credit card support is added, it will definately be password protected as well as encrypted. I've spent the weekend looking for javascript encryption libraries and thinking about the best way to make sure that the security can't be by passed (e.g. through about:config). Those concerns are the reason it wasn't put into 0.1. I didn't want to add it until I was sure that it couldn't be compromised.

Zaunseder, At the moment Autofill only works with Firefox. From your browser string, it looks like you are running Mozilla.

Boomeranger, Jesper and I both use Noia theme which does shrink the icon on mouseover. We'll consider how we could make that behaviour optional if it bothers people.

This would be great, if only you would accept that no one uses standard name attributes, and usually people don't even get very close. My main suggestion is to start using 'VERY' flexible regular expressions. I'd rather it mess up and put my email address in the street address field when compared to completely failing to see things like a first name field. *fname*,*firstname*,*first*name*, etc. This just needs to be MUCH more flexible. About 2/3 of the forms (yahoo, dell, etc) I try it on don't work. Yes, they are partially to blame. But, lets all admit it’s a pretty weak standard, if even really a 'standard' at all. And maybe I haven't looked hard enough, but where is the source?

Sam, all good points. We are headed that direction. We are considering a number of options. What we currently plan for 0.2, is label to field mapping. This way any field that contains "last name" as it's label we will recognize as last name, as long as it doesn't match on the field name first. Further, we are talking about a couple of "learning" options for the fields so that each user's install could optimize for the forms they tend to use. We've also talked about doing the regexp field definitions. That's not quite as simple as it sounds though because it's entirely possible that one field name could match on more than one regular expresion, which causes confusion. We're also considering the capability to definite custom form field names. Be assured that we know there are definite gaps but also keep in mind this is version 0.1, not version 1.0.

On the source question, it's not currently on mozdev's CVS server, but you can easily extract it from the xpi just by opening it in winzip.

quiet1, you need to drag the toolbar button from the customize toolbar palette to the toolbar on first install.

Note, some form fields won't be recognized, but I certainly haven't found 10 forms in a row where that's true. Try using the Test Page above to see if it highlights and fills in. If not, either you haven't added a profile, or something else is wrong.

Quiet1, On the File menu go to View->Toolbars->Customize. In the window that pops up drag the "Autofill" button to the toolbar of your choice.

I personally put it on the Navigation Bar right next to the address field.

Thanks for the feedback, ersplus. I was just thinking about this the other night. First, today we already support more than RFC3106 and the way the extension is written we can easily extend it to new field form names as necessary (including in French). When we add the capability to map form labels to field names, localization is going to be even more important. At the moment, we don't plan to make the next release allow form names and labels customizable, but we do plan to do that at some point.

I'll keep you in mind for translation. I think we have most languages covered through friends, but I'm not sure we know anyone who speaks french.

Grace, you've added the profile incorrectly in the options. There's a bug in 0.1 that enables the fields when you hit add profile even if you don't type a profile name. That's fixed in the next version. To make sure it saves your details, type a profile name in the textbox next to the "add profile" button and click add profile.

Amir, It certainly doesn't work on some forms, but I think the 70-80% number is high. Future versions will recognize more fields.

Google's toolbar seems to detect more fields to fill than this extension does. Is this being looked at? For example, a field named "txtBillAddress" can be filled with Google toolbar, but not Autofill.

Let me raise my hand to add my voice to the "ICON TOO BIG !!!" thread. It just breaks my toolbars : either I put it on its own toolbar, but it makes one toolbar bigger than all the other, or I put it to, say, the navigation toolbar, and all my other icons seem to float in a toolbar way too wide for them.

I think it would be fine to make it fit into a [p/w]instripe theme on a 1024 or 800 screen before going elsewhere (ethical view : don't expect the user to have the same settings than yours, you are not IE devellopers :)

Possible bug. Doesn't "remember" the zip/postal code in the primary address when secondary address is the same. I put the zip in, hit ok, went back and there was no zip.

I used the about:config to fill in the zip and it "stuck". It now also appears in the Tools > Autofill pulldown and works in your test page. As far as what I was doing.

1. Opened the Tools > Autofill pulldown
2. I Only have one profile
3. The "Automatically highlight ..." is checked.
4. The "Use my primary address as ..." is checked
5. The following fields have entries (rest are blank): First Name, Last Name, Email Address, Phone Number, Line 1, City, State/Province, Zip/Postal Code and Country.
6. Click on the "OK" button.
7. Opened the Tools > Autofill pulldown
8. Zip/Postal Code is empty

Note: Now that I have entered the Zip/Postal Code via the about:config screen, I CAN NOT edit it in the Tools > Autofill pulldown.

I'll send you the autofill preferences via email.

Excellent. This Form-Filling thing is what I missed most.

In times I used to browse with MS Internet Explorer I had a free tool called Roboform.
They still exist ( but the newer program versions (the ones that work with Firefox) phone home; so they are out and no alternative any more.
They have some nice functions, though, especially for the detection of fillable fields. You might want to take a look at them for inspiration.

I asked the local municipal government (KIngston, Ontario, Canada) to change the field names on their online parking ticket payment form to conform to RFC3106 so autofill would work better. Here's what they said:

The City of Kingston’s online payment service does not conform to RFC 3106 (using standard names for form fields) for the following reasons:
§ The proposal outlined in RFC 3106 is a "proposal" for ECML v1.1. It does not describe a "standard."
§ ECML is not in wide use.
§ ECML 1.1 proposed a naming convention for HTML form fields with the primary goal of allowing technology like "electronic wallets" to perform better with a variety of Web sites (a sort of single sign-on and fill-out approach to these kinds of things). Very few Internet users have shown interest in "electronic wallet" technology (for example, large e-commerce companies such as Amazon, Chapters, and eBay).

I'm relly impressed! Works real nicely on the test page. A few comments based on installation and only 5 minutes of usage,
1) you relly need to test on 800x600 screen resolution & a two high Windows QuickLaunch/TaskBar/SystemTray; there is no blue information bar at the top (as in the screen shots),
2)Icon way too large! Increases the 'padding' of the MenuBar on an AviaryBranch 20040816-12 0.9.1+ installation; this particular version has the thinnest Menu Bar I have yet to see on a 0.9+ installation (I have installed 20+ different versions in the last 2 1/2 months).

#1) refers to the "Autofill Preferences" box, everything above checkbox & "Automatically highlight th fields Autofill can fill" gets chopped off the the top of my screen, when I bring up "Options". Yep, this is known behaviour because autofill see's the "Address" label and "guesses" that it's part of an address. Then since it only has two lines, and it sees it's not "Address Line 2" it assumes it must be address line 1. We are still deciding what to do about those kind of issues.

Thanks much for writing this program, was one of the main reasons for switching from IE...but I've got a problem, can't seem to install the program correctly...I downloaded it first to my documents and windoze couldn't open the file so I opened with Winrar, but when I select the install file it only opens up to code! Nbot, If FF isn't popping up the install dialog, it's probably because you've got "Allow Websites to install software" unchecked in the FF options.
There are two ways to fix this.

1. In FF go to File->Open File and open the xpi (note, open the xpi,not the jar inside the xpi) you already downloaded. This should popup the install dialog. then just click install.
2. Go to the FF Options (Tools->Options), under "Advanced" scroll down until you see "Allow Websites to install software". Check this box. Then go back and click on the "Install Now" link on update.mozilla.org, or click on the Autofill V0.2 link on the install page on the autofill homepage.

If that doesn't work, drop me an email to discuss further.

Strange. I was able to install this extension when loged in as my wife (Win XP), but when I log in on mine, I can not. I've tried shutting down every other software or service that I can think of the would interfere in the download. But everytime I try to download this XPI I get the Firefox download error---whether from Mozilla Updates, or this website. This happens with several other extensions as well. Some of which will not download no matter who I am logged in as. I have been able to have the developers e-mail me the XPIs for some Thunderbird extensions, and was able to install them that way, but that doesn't work w/ Firefox, because their is no "install" button on the extension manager and can figure out how to have Firefox install an extension saved to my hard drive.

Any thoughts?

Paul, UMO is overloaded with the release of 1.0PR. That could be why you are having problems downloading. The reason the installs could be failing is that the profiles are stored in the current user's appdata directory. Your id may not have write access to your wife's profile. You might try creating a new profile from your userid and seeing what happens (type "firefox -p" to bing up the profile manager). I can't be 100% certain because I'm the only one that uses my laptop, so I've never tried to install an extension from another userid. As to your other problem, if you first download the xpi (right click->save link as), then drag and drop the locally stored xpi into the extension manager window, firefox will try to install it. Maybe I'm a moron, but I can't get this to work. I'm on a Mac G4 using OS X, but I've already noticed others using Macs running this here. SOLUTION. Very strange. (I've been playing with this for an hour without success. Of course, as luck would have it, I would find the solution just minutes after posting here.) In any event, moving the pencil icon to the smaller bookmarks menubar enabled everything. Perhaps this is conflicting with some other extension I'm running (and I'm running quite a few), but moving the icon did the trick. I'm reminded of my earliest Mac days in the late 1980s when I installed so many extensions (very USEFUL things that made the trash spin, etc.), and then I would find that I'd broken the things that really mattered somehow. I'll try to do some troubleshooting to pin down the apparent conflict. Thanks for a great extension and for your patience. Perhaps my serendipitous solution here will help someone else inadvertently as well.

I use LastTab 1.0.4 together with Autofill 0.2, and Autofill seems to disable the Ctrl-Tab feature completely (acts like I didn't even press a key). Any ideas?

I was looking forward to using this extension, but it was a disappointment compared to the autofill on the IE google toolbar. I find taht this one filled in about 10 percent (average) of fields compared to the 80 percent (average) I was enjoying when using IE. Hopefully your future revisions will increase this.

Hope this wasn't mentioned yet, but what about letting the user define alias names for fields to make the detection better? Additionally that would let us create our own field-filling rules.

If AutoFill tries guessing what to enter in what field by taking a look on the field names in the form (like "name" or "surname"), what I assume here, it depends on the most visited forms and hence is user-specific, what to look for and what to enter.

If the detection alogrithm is way different from what I think, drop this idea. :-)

May I add to previous comments about flexibility. The only problem with Autofill 0.2 is that there are obviously huge numbers of non-standard sites around, as the program makes some of the strangest "errors" when filling in the fields. It's almost normal for it to put my whole name in the first name field. When I used IE6 and the Google toolbar it filled in most forms more or less correctly - so far, Autofill gets more fields wrong than right, limiting it's use somewhat.

Just tried re-installing 0.2 from the installation page here, and it worked on my FF 1.0 after trying twice. Strange that I had to install it twice (it said it was incompatible with 1.0 the first time, but I tried it again a second time and it worked without a problem).

Noticed a problem on the "test page" of this website, where my Line 1 address pasted into the Line 1 AND Line 3 of the eCommerce fields. This isn't a major issue, but since you don't allow for a Line 3 in the Preferences dialog box, I imagine that it just uses what it has and guesses. What do you think?

People need to READ this page before posting messages. The latest version of AutoFill works with FF 1.0PR, 1.0RC1, and probably RC2 as well.

*IF* for some reason it does not work for someone, there are two things you can do: One is to put about:config in the address bar, then search for app.extension.version or app.version.extension (I forget which), and change that 1.0 to .10, or it may be the other way around but I think that's correct.

The other is to unpack the xpi extension (change .xpi to .zip) and unzip, then open the install.rdf file in Notepad and look around for something like "max version", then change those instances to 1.0, save the file, then zip/pack it back up using the .xpi extension INSTEAD OF .zip .

Larry, the autofill preferences are stored as part of the FF preferences. So, if you can find a way to syncronize your FF preferences, that should also syncronize your autofill prefs. The most obvious way I can think to do it is to store your profile on a network drive.

I just installed Autofill 0.2 and I found an extremely annoying description for most Taiwanese people when I tried to select my country info for my default form. Corey, all the countries use the ISO standard abreviations and names. So, if you have a problem with the countriy names, then you have a problem with ISO, not with autofill.

Hi Tracy, once again, great extension. I see that you stated back in November (YES, I actually searched and READ the previous posts! lol) that the State/State Abbreviation differentiation "lacks the capability right now to map between the two (name and abbreviations)." Any actual plans to implement this feature as so many websites vary from one to the other? I would think that this would be a fairly high priority item. I love AutoFill. Thanks for the great extension. One thought that I had a while back when I was using the google toolbar on IE (a long, long time ago... don't worry I'm a FF fanatic now), is that it would be nice to optionally see a list of fields that AutoFill would populate on a page, and then allow you to toggle on/off by field if you want AutoFill to populate the data. In this fashion you could feel a bit safer that AutoFill is not populating a malicious hidden field on a page without your knowledge. Just a thought... and thanks again! Eric

I agree, this is early days for this extension. For me it works way better than 80% on both windoze and Linux platforms.

I guess we should expect newcomers to the open source concept to have a bit of a learning curve while they figure out how it all works. Seems to install with Firefox 1.0 for me (under Windows XP SP2), but with 0.2 installed, tabbing from one input field to the next became very, very slow - maybe half a second to switch fields. This is on a 2GHz P4. Uninstalling solved it.

Guest, I think you are mistaken. The ip address you named resolves to top25cigar.com. Did you happen to be reading about cigars in another tab at the time? Or, have you been using IE lately and possibly have spyware installed? Either way, autofill's source code is easily extractable from the install xpi and you can examine it if you wish. Your personal information is only stored locally and the credit card information is encrypted before it's stored.

As a side note, pressing OK wouldn't cause anything to happen. Nothing happens till you add the toolbar button to the toolbar, go to page w/ a form, and then click the button.

Lastly, you should be sure of what you say before spreading FUD...

Tenz, while I sympathize with your concern Autofill uses the ISO 3166 standards for country codes and names. In that standard, Taiwan is reflected as you quote. If you want it changed, you'll have to get ISO to agree to change first. Until then, it stays as is.

Just installed the extension and tried it in Intuit / Quicken website using it to fill in"Billing Address and Payment Info..." form. The 1st click worked well filling in most data- missing phone #and zip code. I canceled and clicked again gettin a mess - it filled in most slots with part of my street # and only city, state & street # were correct. Generally this works great. It is less reliable in terms of matching info to fields than roboform, but because it integrates so much better I use it anyway. One thing I think you should add to your todo list is to add plus4 info to the zipcode, since some forms ask for that, and autofill just puts my regular zip in both the zip and plus4 fields.

How about blending autofill and clipboard functions so that we'd have the ability to paste pre-created "autotext" at the click of a button. And, it would be generic, not tied to any particular textbox. For example, you have a long tracking number from UPS. If you could drag the text (just as you can drag links)and make a button out of it, and name it "UPS" that would be incredible! I apologize if this goes beyond the scope of what autofill is about. I'm just some dork who likes Firefox and Mozilla 1.6.

When I tried to create profiles, I noticed that Taiwan is denoted as "Taiwan, Province of China" in the country list. Well, it is not. You probably have pulled the list from some internet database. I urged you to correct that as soon as you can. Thanks.

Just noticed that Autofill is completely incompatible with QVC.com's fields. I'm not sure, but it may be because it's a secure page? Here's an example where it doesn't work:

Not sure if this is something fixable. But it's the only major site at which I've seen Autofill not work at all.

What do you think?

I'd like to see the ability to fill in individual fields, say by a context-menu opition.

Sometimes forms come in pre-filled with existing information, and using the autofill actually overwrites information in some fields I'd like to keep. The ability to selectively fill fields would be great in these cases.

In order to completely give up IE with no regrets, it would be great to have autofill work more like IE's because that is actually very good, logical, and versatile. (autocomplete options as well as forms autofill "master") I find drop-downs of options to be really annoying, unless they are user-defined options that are subordinate to a "prime choice" defined in an autofill profile. They're especially annoying when they remember previous entries that were unintentionally incorrect. (Is there a way to selectively delete such remembered entries?) It's more efficient to have the field autofill (WITHOUT needing to select from a dropdown), then have other options (if any) in a dropdown.

I've installed, uninstalled and reinstalled the autofill extension at least twice. Information is entered for filling forms. Trouble is when a page comes up asking for input the fields are highlighted, but the autofill button is grayed out. Firefox version 1.03. Great extension. Missing this feature was the only reason I kept IE around. Needs some worke like others mentioned, but great start. I hope you don't mind these suggestions:
Please add these field names. This is from a large site (tucows and opensrs) that I use all the time. I'm surprised that some of their fields aren't working with your extension. They work fine with the google toolbar btw.

For example, I have multiple e-mail addresses, and it appears that Autofill has captured two of them on some screens , but not the third. Needs updating.
Specifically, when two fields (as is often the case) need to be filled out, I have them both saved and completed (billing and shipping, for example), clicking on one frequently fills in BOTH forms - one of them being incorrect and then needeng to be re-done manually... negating the usefulness of the concept.

Emulating how Safari handles this functionality: When you begin to type in a recognizable form element and your input matches the profile (e.g. your profile first name is "John" and you type "j" into a recognized first name element), the extension autocompletes that field. If you accept the autocomplete (e.g. hit tab), the rest of the form elements are autofilled.

Great product. There may be another bug, however. Google's home page just added some additional java code to allow setting of options. If Autofill is enabled, the java code is broken. Disable Autofill, and everything works.

You could do with adding more card types, or 'other' allowing people to put in their own. I use a maestro card which is a direct debit card like switch (which is being phased out and replaced with maestro) and it is common throughout Europe. It isn't in your list of card choices, and there is no way of entering it.

I need a general web form-filler like RoboForm, which is not available for Linux (RoboForm saves the text input into any web form, and can fill the form automatically thereafter).

My Fastmail account has 20 rows of pull-down menus and textfields in a spreadsheet-like fashion for folder management, but with Autofill installed, the page takes an additional 3 seconds to load, and the following options are also delayed for almost exactly as long:

Shift-direction to highlight text in a textfield
Copying highlighted text in a textfield

In addition, the following operation is delayed for about 5-10% of the originating specified time:

Thanks Adam, but we actually know already. It appears to be a google bug not an autofill bug. The same thing happens w/ TargetAlert. It appears that Google's js code doesn't realize that they can't access chrome url's. There is more detail in the autofill mailing list archives on this subject.

To use on Firefox 1.0.x (possibly 1.5) download the xpi file, rename from autofill-0.2-fx.xpi to autofill-0.2-fx.zip, unzip somewhere, edit install.rdf with a text editor and change the value for em:maxVersion (I used a value of 1.10), save the file, rebuild the zip file and rename back zip to autofill-0.2-fx.xpi, you can then load this into later versions of firefox. It seems to work on 1.0.7, hope this helps.

Go to the folder where you saved and follow directions from Derry B

It seems that the extension .25 will not work in my Firefox 1.5.

Two features that would be extremely useful. The first is a keyboard shortcut. Many of the forms I run into pop-up without the toolbar.

Thanks. This works pretty well. But I have the following problems:

1. If a web form item is labelled "Prefix" (meaning Title), autofill does not fill in my title, as it should.

2. In "Autofill Preferences", shouldn't there be a separate item for both Home Phone and Work Phone? Many forms ask for both, so if "Autofill Preferences" doesn't let you enter both, autofill will simply take the phone number you entered and use it to fill in both Home Phone and Work Phone on the web form, which is wrong.

If you could take care of these problems, it would be great. Thank you.

A dirty hack for international users: appending custom label names to "autofill.form_label_name." in about:config seems to work fine. For example, change "autofill.form_label_name.first_name" from "first" to "first,prenom" to get it (i.e. first name) working on most french sites, and so on.

I was so tickled when I ran across your site on forums@mozillazine.org!! In fact I did a search for Auto-fill. And some posts came up and a link to your site was on about the 2 or 3rd down. I lost this extention a couple of weeks ago when I tried a new theme in Tbird. Big mistake!! And I still have not recovered from it. My Address book cards are sized incorrectly, so are a lot of pages of other things--one of which is the page needed to fill in the profile for this but that's ok!! I have it and I can SEE the pencil!! Even if it's grey. I'm working on the problem and I'm comforted just knowing I've found where I had originaly gotten it.

By the way, I tried doing a search on Mozilla and FF and on the extensions page before they messed it up(imho) hard to find anything now!

I can't see the OK button to click when finished filling in profile fields. Thus I can't put in a profile? And with country I can't see the scrolling to select a country ,but was able by moving mouse to where I thought it was located and was able to activate it and then pick country.

Was glad to find this extension since I used Autofill quite often while having IE. Got disapointed when I tried installing it. I have Firefox 2.0. Your latest version of Autofill Extension V0.3, will not work for it. So I guess I will have to wait till it does. I hope this is soon.

Just upgraded my FireFox and the extension seems to work well on forms...however, it only works on forms where I can actually click the Autofill button (i.e., popup windows don't always have a toolbar option, so there's no button to press). Is there a CTRL+ option for Autofill, or are there plans to implement one? CTRL+F is Find, of course, so that's no good, but perhaps Shift+CTRL+F or something like that?

GREAT job making this work with FireFox, overall. That was the only thing I really missed about I.E.

Given that this extension was last updated in June 2005, I doubt that we'll ever see a version which is compatible with Firefox 2 :-(

The Google Toolbar does include an Autofill function which works with Firefox 2,

This works just fine under FF2.0. All you have to do is tweak the max version number to get it to install. There are no coding incompatibilities that I've come across.

Just use a ZIP program to extract the install.rdf file from the .xpi compressed file, open it in a text editor, and em:maxversion value to 2.0+

Zip the file back to the .xpi file, and it should install.

I lovew this form filler. I have been using it for some time and it works perfectly. Once in a while I have a problem with it putting my name in the user id field but that is easy to change. I would like to see at least two more fields or customizable fields we can use. Pop Photo contests requires age and sex info and that is a pain when filling out 5 or 6 or 10 forms.

Thanks for the work you've done to build this and keep it up. I know how crazy it can get with a million people hollering about bugs and another billion wanting it do more.

Only just come across Firefox. Have added CoolIris and and make good use of it. OK I tried adding the rdf file but it didn't work (and I have done it successfully before).

However here is how I got it working:

1.Download and install 'Nightly tester tools@ from here

2.when installed open add on menu in Firefox ie tools/addons

3.select 'nightly tester tools' and click the options button.

4.In the options window select the add on tab and tick 'Disable add-on compatibility checking'

4.Now download and install 'autofill'. Nearly there now!

5.Go to tools\addons again and there should be a button at the bottom added by 'nightly tester tools' called @make all compatible'. Click it and restart firefox and all should be well!

6.Redo the check for compatibility check in step 4 if you wish.

The simplest way to make Autofill compatible with any Firefox version is through the "MR Tech Local Install" addon. You can find MR Tech at

Once the MR Tech addon is installed and enabled, simply open the Extensions window in Firefox, right-mouse click on the Autofill addon, and click on "Make Compatible." MR Tech will do the rest. Now restart Firefox and you're all set. I've been using this technique through Firefox 2.0.0.12 and have never had a problem. Hope this helps. I agree that Autofill is an excellent addon.
